Read Colossians 2:8-3:4, which confronts some kind of philosophical heresy (often labeled, “the
Colossian Heresy”) that had taken root in Colossae. We don’t know for sure the exact nature of
the wrong thinking that is being attacked.
(a) Describe in your own words some of the things that are confronted and must have been part
of the Colossian Heresy.
(b) Describe in your own words some things are asserted in the passage for correct thinking in
opposition to the Colossian Heresy.
#6 – Philemon and Onesimus
Read Philemon (all 25 verses), which is a brief letter asking Philemon to forgive, restore, and
send back a runaway slave named Onesimus to Paul who was imprisoned.
(a) Describe in your own words what positive things Paul says about Onesimus in the letter.
(b) Describe in your own words what positive things Paul says about Philemon in the letter.
#7 – Church Leaders in 1 Timothy
Read 1 Timothy 3:1-16, which summarizes the qualification of church leaders (cf. Titus 1:5-7).
Notice the passage is not giving a job description, but the qualifications of church leaders,
probably in order to disqualify false teachers who were a problem in the church.
(a) Describe in your own words the qualifications for a bishop/overseer (Greek, episkopos) in
1 Timothy 3:1-7.
(b) Describe in your own words the qualifications for deacons/servants (Greek, diakonos) in
1 Timothy 3:8-13.
#8 – Paul’s Farewell in 2 Timothy
Read 2 Timothy 4:1-22 which is the end of the letter which functions as Paul’s farewell address
to his close friend, Timothy.
