Aspect A: The podcast identified 3 original components from Carl Jung’s view of personality. Identify those three components and describe the two ends of the spectrum identified for each of those components.
Aspect B: The podcast identifies two important characteristics that the MBTI lacks, validity and reliability. Define each of those terms in your own words, then reflect on whether or not these concepts are important. What are your thoughts on whether or not MBTI results should be used to determine such things as employment? Aspect C: The podcast shares information about researchers looking into the Chinese Zodiac and children who were born under the dragon zodiac. In Chinese culture it is believed that those born under the dragon zodiac have a predisposition for great success. The podcast talks about how these children are more successful in school than children born in the zodiac before and after the year of the dragon. Share your thoughts on what the research found, especially the explanation for why these children are higher achievers. How could we use this information to educate parenting strategies. Aspect D: With regards to personality measures, are they powerful because they predict personality or because people live up to what is predicted? What are your thoughts? If you are a Harry Potter fan…what are your thoughts about the hat? Please choose TWO of the Four provided Essay prompts and thoroughly answer all aspects of the question. The essay questions need to be answered without the assistance of textbooks or other sources of information. Your answers need to be solely based on your knowledge. OPTION A: This unit starts off talking about four different approaches to describe human nature: psychodynamic, humanistic, trait, and social-cognitive approaches.
In one sentence for each approach, describe a core belief of the approach.
Johnnie comes to see you, his therapist, because he is struggling in his current relationship. He and his partner have been arguing a lot over his current work situation. Johnnie was laid off from his last job and is struggling to find a new job. He is a bit sad and unmotivated. Pick TWO of the approaches and briefly describe how each approach might address Johnnie’s problem and help him. OPTION B: Sigmund Freud is a well-known contributor to the world of psychology
Jane loves to eat cake all the time and will eat it any time of the day, Bob is a stickler for the rules and is very quick to quote city ordinance at any chance he can get. Paul is an even keeled kind of guy who sometimes enjoys a cake and usually drives the speed limit, respecting the law. If you had to label each of these three people as either Id, Ego, or Superego, what would they each be? Pick Jane, Bob, or Paul. What might Freud say happened during the psychosexual stages of development to lead this person to act this way? Clearly identify a stage of development where you think things “went wrong”. OPTION C: Social Cognitive Approach focuses on how a person interacts with the world.
Reciprocal determinism is the belief that three components interact to influence our daily experiences. Susan has been struggling with a substance abuse problem for the last 2 years. She was able to break free from a domestic violence situation that was very dangerous but has been struggling to deal with the emotional turmoil that the relationship has brought out. She often feels that she is not worthy of a “good” relationship and is avoiding dating, instead she turns to substances to cope with her inner turmoil. She often says that her ex is the reason she is like she is. With your knowledge of reciprocal determinism, identify the three factors and discuss how each impacts the other. Pick one of the factors and describe how things could be different if that component were different.
Is Susan being controlled by an internal locus of control or an external locus of control? Explain your answer OPTION D: Personality trait testing is all the rage on social media. It is very easy to find someone that is identifying their personality type using a quick quiz online.
With knowledge learned in this unit, and previous units, reflect on how valid and reliable personality tests are.
The Rorschach Inkblot test is a well known projective assessment of personality. Based on what you have learned in this unit, would it be a good assessment to use for determining a diagnosis of mental illness? Discuss why or why not. Also, how would this assessment be useful?
Pick a famous actor/actress and describe how they would be categorized in each of the Big 5 personality traits.
