Formatting: double spacing; you must proofread and edit your own writing before submitting it. Film Essay Writing:
Writing about film can be different to writing about literature. Since it is difficult to quote from a film, it is often necessary to describe the scene or frame under discussion. Do not be afraid of describing what is happening on screen and on the soundtrack. In addition, be sure to explain how a specific scene fits into the film as a whole
(What is happening? Who are these people? What is the context of the action? You should avoid formulations like “In the scene with the elephant…”).
Good scene description within a narrative context is an important part of film analysis. A succinct and relevant plot summary can also be very helpful but avoid lengthy and unnecessary story description.
I also suggest that you consult Timothy Corrigan’s A Short Guide to Writing About Film (2010) – syllabus: recommended reading list.
There is no need to provide timecodes for film scene discussions.
Refer to films using their accepted English language titles.
It is generally better to write, “The film shows us that…” rather than “The director shows us that…”. Choose ONE of the following essay TOPIC CHOSEN:
In The Story of Film: An Odyssey, E1: Birth of the Cinema (2011), Mark Cousins argues that ideas drive cinema. Explain why you agree or disagree with this statement. Bring at least two examples from this documentary film.
I chose the clips from The Story of Film: An Odyssey, E1: Birth of the Cinema (2011), Mark Cousins.
Saving Private Ryan
AND
The Life of an American Fireman
BUT ANY OTHER clip from the film please feel free to add it if it makes more clarity for this essay.
The Script is attached and these two clips are underlined in the Transcript. Use these two underlined clips/scripts to reference what Mark Cousins means by IDEAS DRIVE CINEMA.
Be sure to mention something about money and tickets sales are NOT the driving force of cinema as it was mentioned in the Story of Film: An Odyssey, E1: Birth of the Cinema. Be sure to cite it.
I agree with Mark Cousins so the conclusion and the body of the essay should make reference to that.
