The story shows the internal dynamics primarily of one man, based on his experience on a jury. Then answer all the aspects
Aspect A: Explore the social psychology theory that you most likely think is being displayed in this situation. Discuss why you would apply the theory you have identified. Aspect B: After you identify the theory and your reasoning to support your decision, discuss your own thoughts about the struggle that the main character felt in the group situation and your most honest attempt to imagine how you would have handled that situation. Aspect C: Identify and reflect on one time in your life that you have felt some sort of social pressure. Discuss how the concepts you have learned in this module applied to your action(s) and response(s). Please choose TWO of the eight provided essay prompts and thoroughly answer all aspects of the question. The essay questions need to be answered without the assistance of textbooks or other sources of information. Your answers need to be solely based on your knowledge.
Here are your essay options:
OPTION A: You are trying to get to class on time, but your alarm clock does not go off (power outage), so you have to skip your shower to make up the time. Then there is a detour on the highway, and you can’t find a parking space. As you run into class ten minutes late (for your third time), your teacher explains that you cannot receive attendance credit. Later in the hallway you overhear her say to another teacher, “Students today are so irresponsible—they don’t even try to get to class on time”. What social psychology concept accounts for this teacher’s perception of her students’ behaviors? Define the concept and give one more example of it from your personal life. OPTION B: Cognitive dissonance often arises after making an important decision, called post-decision dissonance (or in popular terms, buyer’s remorse). Explain what this concept means. Then, describe a recent decision you made that caused dissonance and describe how you resolved it. OPTION C: One point that is often made in social psychology is that groups can increase the chances we will behave “better” than usual or “worse” than usual. Please give two examples in your life when the effect of being in a group had (a) a positive effect on your behavior and then (b) a negative effect on your behavior. Make sure that each of these two examples represents one of the following dynamics: conformity, social loafing, social facilitation or deindividuation. OPTION D: Please describe group polarization and groupthink, making clear the difference between the two. Then give at least one example of each either from the material presented in class or from your own experiences.
OPTION E: We learned of three “social” causes of prejudice: social inequalities, ingroup vs outgroup and scapegoating. Please describe how each of these three processes can lead to prejudice and give an example from your life of one of them. (You may be the person who was prejudiced against or the person who was exhibiting prejudice toward someone else). OPTION F: While walking through a busy city park, Mr. Juliano experiences sharp chest pains that indicate to him the onset of a heart attack. Under what circumstances will Mr. Juliano have increased chances that someone will come to his aid and quickly provide him with appropriate medical attention. Explain the rationale for your advice in light of research on altruism and the decision-making process underlying bystander intervention. You should describe at least three different points.
OPTION G: Explain how the National Dairy Council (or any other advertisement you can think of) used peripheral route persuasion to increase America’s milk consumption. OPTION H: Katia got an A on her psychology final and a D on her sociology final. If the self-serving bias is influencing her, how might Katia explain this?
